So You're Afraid of Sex Shops. . .

I may be a Sexual Wellness Educator now, but I was 25 the first time I stepped foot in a “sex shop”. The shop was a revelation for me – nestled in downtown Halifax, it wasn’t what I had always pictured.

You probably know the tropes I was thinking of – some seedy hole in the wall, full of leering stares and demeaning, de-humanizing porn and blow-up dolls. A place that would be far from safe or comfortable, a place you wouldn’t want to be seen going into. And don’t get me wrong – there are places like that. But this little shop in Halifax was not one of them.

When my partner and I walked inside, we weren’t greeted with the degrading, violent places commodified sexuality can go, but with a bright, cheery space. The faces were friendly, the books enthralling, the vibe open and non-judgemental.

That shop in Halifax is not the only shop of its kind (though it’s great, check out Venus Envy if you are in the Halifax area). Shebop in Seattle has been a pioneer for women’s sexuality. But you don’t need to go to either coast for this type of experience – you just need to head to downtown Saskatoon.

Friendly, inclusive, open, fun, spiritual. Does that sound like the behind-the-curtain sex shops depicted in the media? I’m guessing not. It is, however, precisely the atmosphere that Positive Passions has worked so hard over the past 9 years to create. So you’re afraid of sex shops? That’s just because you haven’t met us yet.

Walk through our doors, and you’ll be faced not with harmful, unrealistic images of women or men, but with art, smiling faces, and one VERY memorable chair.

Talk to our staff (ask us the questions you’re afraid to Google), attend a pole dance class, or a workshop, or book a Passionate Playthings Party, and we will try our hardest to give you an affirming, inspiring, revitalizing experience. Because that, my friends, is what a sex shop should be – for everyone. You are welcome here. If you’re a little nervous, if you’re new to the exploration of sexuality, or if you’re just looking for something different – you’re welcome here.

And if it’s your first time coming to a “sex shop” – don’t worry. We’ll be gentle.

-Jess
