What makes them SUPERfoods?

                  What makes them SUPERfoods?

The universe is always expanding, and Positive Passions is no exception. We have added a new area to the store that we call the Wellness Room. Here you can find things like Essential Oils, Precious Stones, and Superfoods. There are a lot of people who don’t know the true benefits of superfoods, and we think that is information everyone should know!

You’ve probably heard of superfoods before, acai berries have become very popular recently and they are a prime example of a superfood.  But what constitutes a superfood? The Oxford English Dictionary has this to say on the subject: “[a superfood is] a food considered especially nutritious or otherwise beneficial to health and well-being”, and acai fits that description snugly because of its powerful antioxidant properties among other qualitites. All the superfoods we carry are products of Intuitive Path Superfoods, a locally owned and operated company. You can check out their website here: www.intitivepathsuperfoods.com. The products we have in stock are all nutrient rich and incredibly healthy, and this blog post will discuss many of them and their benefits.

Cacao is a bean that grows on a tree native to the Andes. If superfoods were the Justice League, Cacao would be Superman, because it is not only the most complex superfood, it is also the one with the most benefits. Our cacao comes from Ecuador and is the #1 source of magnesium found in food, giving it the ability to balance mood and increase the ability to focus. It also contains a weak but effective natural stimulant that gives a much cleaner and longer lasting boost than caffeine. Cacao has a chocolatey flavour that mixes well into smoothies, coffee, and deserts, and increases both male and female libido. It also stimulates the body’s endorphin system, causing an increased sense of well being, and helping to diminish appetite and aid in weight loss.

Our premium cacao is offered in many different formats:

-Whole beans, which are best for snacking on directly

-Cacao Nibs, which are the crushed up bits of the beans with the husks removed.

-Cacao Powder, which is best for adding to smoothies, milk, coffee, and other recipes.

-Cacao Butter, which is a butter made from the fatty beans, useful for spreading on things such as food or people, as it is also an incredibly good moisturizer.

Cacao also has a host of other benefits that are far too numerous to list here, but you can check out the website mentioned above for the full details.

                Camu Camu Berry

Camu Camu berry grows on a small, bushy tree that grows on riverbanks and produces the cherry-like fruits.  It is also very fun to say. The most extraordinary quality of this berry is its incredibly high concentration of vitamin C (2-3% of its weight!). This is so incredible because it is higher than any other plant on the planet, and the body is able to absorb vitamin C from plant sources exponentially better than other mineral sources. Camu Camu also has powerful antiseptic and anti-mutagenic properties, and makes a great addition to smoothies or fruit drinks.

                 Chaga Tonic

Chaga is a medicinal mushroom that has been a component of Russian folk medicine since the 16th century.  It was used then to treat various inflammatory conditions and stomach and lung cancers, and has since been discovered to be full of phyto-nutrients that actually slow the aging process. It has very high levels of antioxidants, and exhibits strong anti-viral activity. This tonic can be taken directly or dissolved into other liquids to achieve the magical properties.

                 Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds are the seeds of an annual herb that is part of the mint family and grows purple or white flowers. Chia seeds are also the seeds that were used to make the “Chia Pet” toy that was popular in the 1980s. Not only can they be used to grow “hair” on terracotta figurines, they have a 20% protein content with all essential amino acids, making them a great alternative to other sources of protein. These fatty acids promote cardiovascular health, assist joint function and mobility, and reduce triglycerides. Another astounding property of chia seeds is that they can absorb over 12 times their weight in water, which reduces digestive tract time and removes toxins while it passes through the digestive tract. A great addition to smoothies and other recipes because it reduces blood sugar levels, inhibiting the appetite.

                  Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is most likely the coolest oil on the earth, it has a multitude of uses and wins that special place in our hearts because of its application as a body safe massage oil and lubricant! Coconut oil is good for cosmetic things like hair and skin care, as well as weight loss, increased immunity, and high blood pressure. It can also help with stress relief, and has soothing properties. It’s also the world’s only low calorie fat, and is the most stable of all oils, having a shelf life of three years or longer. Our coconut oil comes from fresh coconuts that do not go through a refining process and is known as Raw Centrifuge Virgin Coconut Oil.

                  Goji Berries

Goji berries are small, oblong red berries that can grant an amazing amount of benefits to those who eat them. They are very high in antioxidants, which help to combat the aging process and cancer, and are said to increase the "chi", or life energy. Goji also helps facilitate the release of HGH (Human Growth Hormone), which is responsible for cellular reproduction. The other benefits of HGH include: increased concentration, faster healing, better sleep, weight loss, and increased libido and performance (nudge nudge wink wink).

They are also jam packed with 18 amino acids, and are the largest source of carotenoids (they have more beta-carotene than carrots!) of all known foods. They make a great snack on their own, or try adding them to cereal, granola, salads, baked goods, or tea.

                  Golden Berries

Our Golden Berries are vine-ripened and harvested from bushes in the Andean foothils of Ecuador, where they were first discovered. They are very tangy and sweet, and if you're a fan of sour things like I am you'll eat these berries by the handful! Besides being absolutely delicious, they also have high amounts of carotene and bio-flavinoids (vitamin P). They're a great source of vitamins C and A, and have lots of dietary fiber and protein in them. These are great alone, in trail mixes, or try replacing other berries in baked goods for flavourful explosions.

                  Hemp seeds

Hemp seeds have the 2nd highest protein content of any food, and they contain all 20 amino acids, including the 9 amino acids our bodies cannot produce on their own. Their various proteins aid in digestion, boosting immune system and energy, and have anti-inflammatory properties. They add a hearty touch to smoothies, yogurt, or trail mixes, and are great eaten by the handful or even in sandwiches!

MagNascent Iodine (the type we carry) is a type of nascent iodine that is magnetically broken down to produce more potent versions of the atoms of the essential element.  Iodine is an essential nutrient; it increases the production of the thyroid gland, which in turn increases production of all other hormones. The benefits of iodine include: Fluoride detoxification, Improved cognitive functioning, and Improved metabolism because it helps the body bio synthesize food into usable nutrients. Many people in North America are iodine deficient, and do not get enough from their daily diet.  (ß Every source I found indicates that iodine deficiency is NOT common for North Americans, so I need you to cite a source for this.  Vegetarians and vegans are recommended to take iodine supplements, so maybe that’s a better angle?   - Shannon)

                    Marine Phytoplankton

Marine Phytoplankton are tiny sea creatures that are too small to see without a microscope, so you only need a small amount of this super concentrated tincture. The plankton are rich in EPA and DHA omega 3 essential fatty acids, enzymes, pigments, and minerals known to optimize brain and heart function. They undergo a very specific and advanced process to ensure that they are not killed during any part of the journey. They live in the bottle in suspended animation because of the solution they are placed in, and they do not require refrigeration! Just a few drops of this provides major benefits, not the least of which is pretending you're godzilla eating a million people when you take it.

                   Schizandra Berries

Schizandra Berries grow on upward-creeping vines which produce oval shaped pink leaves, and are most well known for their exquisite taste. In China they are known as we-wei-zei, or 5 flavour fruit, providing hints of sour, bitter, salty, sweet, and spicy flavours. Our organic schizandra comes in powdered form for ease of use, and goes well in smoothies, granola, yogurt, or drinks like milk or juice. Schizandra berry is an adaptogen, meaning that it adapts to whatever way the body is feeling at the time and normalises it. This gives it limitless applications, and makes it great as a full-spectrum defense against almost any ailment. Schizandra may sound like a crazy name, but the only crazy thing about these berries is how good they are for you!

                   Organic Hemp Protein Powder

Blueberries are easily the most common superfood out there; most people don't even know they are a superfood! They are full of anti-oxidants, vitamins A and C and fiber to help with digestion. The rest of this product is organic hemp protein powder, and we've already talked about the benefits that it can bring. A notable quality of this product is the energy boost it gives when consumed. Delicious when mixed into a smoothie.

Know how I compared the superfoods to the justice league a while ago? Well, if cacao was superman, maca would be batman, because maca's got your back...a. Maca is a root vegetable that grows in Peru. Our maca comes from the Junin Plateu, at 14000 feet elevation. Maca includes 20 fatty acids, amino acids, and minerals, and is another adaptogen, meaning it adapts to whatever your body needs at the time. Maca stimulates the hypothalamus and pituitary glands, which are the glands that regulate all the other glands in the body. Because of this it is well known for its ability to balance mood and hormone levels, which helps with PMS, menopause, and hot flashes. Maca is also a powerful fertility enhancer, and improves libido and sexual performance, especially in men. (trust me.)

                   Vanilla Bean

Our whole vanilla beans are sourced from family growers in New Guinea. The variety grown there has a rich creamy flavour and is known as Vanilla Tahitiensis. Vanilla is a great addition to all sorts of cooking, used for its distinct flavour. Add it to deserts or other sweet things for that creamy, smooth taste that made it so popular in the first place.

                   White Mulberries

One of the very few fruits considered a protein source, mulberries are an excellent source of iron, magnesium, potassium, riboflavin, calcium, vitamin C, and fiber. Regular consumption of white mulberries promotes longevity and a healthy heart. Mulberries have levels of antioxidants that are 79% higher than blueberries, which make them excellent in combating infection. Eat these sweet, chewy berries on their own like raisins, or add them to oatmeal, pancakes, or cereal.

                   Superfood Trailmix

Easily the most nutritious trailmix you will find in a long time, our superfood trailmix consists of:

-Goji Berries

-Golden Berries

-Black & White Mulberries

-Jungle Peanuts

-Raw Cacao Beans

Perfect in your car or during a hike, or pretty much any time you're looking for a delicious and nutritious snack. Also a great way to shove lots of different things in your mouth at the same time!

                   Earthling Organic Bars

These bars are raw and unbaked, made by a soaking and drying process, and are really delicious! They come in four flavours. each with different benefits.

-Goji Bar, with all the benefits of goji berries.

-Matcha Bar, with the properties of green tea, good for an extra boost!

-Rawnola Chocolate, packed with the goodness of cacao.

-Rawnola Vanilla, distinct flavour and full of tastiness.
